Unfortunately, I was missing cream, celery, milk, and the exact amount of liquid in a can of chicken broth. I called Grandmother to let her know I was heading to the the grocery store, and she requested that rather than go to Shopper's (a store that I knew exactly how to get to), I should go to Giant (where I had been once, when I wasn't driving). I told her I was hesitant, and requested clarification of how to get there. This was supplied, but I neglected to write the instructions down.
So, without a map (but with a general idea, so it's okay) I sallied forth. During Rush Hour. In the rain. While it was dark. If you've been following this blog, you know why I should have been slightly more hesitant to head out. The journey to the store was fairly uneventful, of which I am glad. I ended up getting the ingredients I needed, as well as a bottle of Carrot juice, but the item that Grandmother sent me to Giant to get was no longer on sale, so I was instructed to leave it be.
So, when exiting the parking lot of the store, I was nearly rammed by a person driving far too fast with his headlights off. Not fun. I also ended up in the wrong lane as a result of this, which had me driving away from the direction that I wanted. Namely, home safe and sound. Luckily, there was an entrance to a shopping center that could be used to reverse my direction, so I took that. Unluckily, someone nearly rammed me in the side of my car because they thought they could totally beat me into an intersection. Nevermind the fact that I was partway through. Again, not fun.
Fortunately, I was able to get through the rest of the trip home safely. So, ingredients in hand, I began to make the Potato Soup. Unfortunately, I believe there may have been a typo in the recipe I was given. I didn't really think much of it, except for a mild feeling that this might be a bad idea. Either that, or Mom has far too much salt in the recipe. Not quite to the point of Potato-flavoured salt lick, but still. So, next time only a quarter as much salt, if even that.
I also made some fresh (non-sweet) whipped cream to go in the middle of the soup, which did help to cut down the saltiness. All in all, it is a lesson learned for the next time I make the soup. Beyond being super-salty, and the potatoes needing to be cut into smaller chunks, it was quite good. I also added some crumbled bacon to the top of the soup for presentation, because everything is better with bacon. Sadly, it added even more salt, but whatever.
Okay, that's about it for tonight. Goodnight everybody, and stay safe out there.
It has been confirmed that the sheer mountain of salt was indeed a typo. So, the quantity has been changed in the recipe.
